배재대학교 유아교육센터

하워드관은 배재대 유아교육학과와 거기에서 파생된 유치원, 어린이집, 보육교사교육원 이렇게 4개의 기관이 같이 사용하는 건물이다. 캠퍼스의 동쪽 경계에 위치한 폭이 좁고 긴 땅으로 대지의 형상을 따라 자연스럽게 흘러가는 선형의 매스를 도로 측에 배치하여 어린이들이 사용하는 후면의 외부공간이 대학 캠퍼스로부터 받는 영향을 최소화하였다. 프로그램 사이의 긴밀하거나 느슨한 관계들을 반영한 단면상의 배치와 내부동선의 연결은 투명한 외피와 계단을 통해 외부로 표출되며, 이는 서측의 일사차단을 위한 수직루버와 함께 건물의 표정을 만든다.

기존 지형을 부드럽게 복원하여 형성한 뒷마당은 유치원과 어린이집을 시각적 공간적으로 연결, 서로 상호작용할 수 있도록 배려하고 있다. 또한 교실들의 중심공간으로 계획된 홀은 도시의 광장과 같은 공적인 성격으로 계획되어 어린이들이 모이고 흩어지고, 서로 바라보고, 어울리고, 소통하면서 스스로 만들어 나가는 공간이 되기를 기대한다.

Howard center is a building for four departments, Paichai University’s early childhood education department and derived kindergarten, children daycare center, and school for nursery teachers. Located at the long narrow shaped site of the eastern border of the campus the linear building mass flows along the particular site shape is positioned on the street side so that the children could be exposed at the least influence from outside. The sectional program placements and internal circulation based on the tight or loose relationship between programs are expressed through the transparent building skin and staircase and it creates the building's expression with vertical louvers which blocks the daylight.

The backyard formed by gently restoring the existing ground connects the kindergarten and children daycare center and helps them interact each other. Moreover the hall placed at the center of classrooms, similar to the central square within a city, is expected to be a field for children to gather, be scattered, look each other, hang out, communicate and create their own space.
