공예는 바라보는 대상이 아니라 사용을 통해 교감하는 일상의 예술품이다. 서울공예박물관은 방문객뿐만 아니라 시민 모두에게 공예에 대한 교육과 영감을 얻고 서로 소통하는 기회를 제공하는 일상의 공간이 되어야 한다. 이를 위해 공예박물관의 정체성을 드러내는 진입마당과 도심 속 열린 시민공원으로 기능하는 박물관마당, 두 개의 외부공간을 배치하고 이 외부공간을 에워싸고 연결하는 투명한 공용공간들이 길과 전시, 교육, 연구 등의 박물관 기능을 관통하는 공간구조를 취하도록 하였다. 진입마당을 형성하는 삽입된 벽체와 기존 풍문여고 학사동 사이의 공간에는 카페, 뮤지엄샵, 세미나실 등을 배치, 길과 연계된 도시생활의 한 부분이 될 수 있도록 하였다. 율곡로 3길과 윤보선길을 연결하며 동서방향으로 관통하여 설치되는 회랑은 박물관마당의 영역을 명확하게 규정하면서 다양한 활동의 배경이 될 수 있다.

Craft is not an object of sight, but a work of art that communicates through use. The Seoul Craft Museum should be an everyday space that provides not only visitors but also citizens with education and inspiration on crafts and opportunities to communicate with each other. For this, the entrance yard revealing the identity of the craft museum, the museum yard functioning as an open public park in the city, and the transparent public spaces that surround and connect the two external spaces are used for roads, exhibitions, education, and research.The whole space therefore penetrates the museum's function. The café, museum shop, and seminar room were placed in the space between the inserted wall that forms the entrance yard and the existing Baekmun Girls' High School, so that it can be a part of urban life connected with the road. The corridor, which connects Yulgok-ro 3-gil and Yunbo-sun-gil,penetrating in the east-west direction, can be the background of various activities while clearly defining the area of ​​the museum yard.
